8 Reasons Why You Would Need a Supplement

We always recommend food first as a source of nutrients but there are many clinical reasons why food might not be enough to meet your individual nutrient needs.  Click on each item below to learn more:

1. Standard American Diet (is so SAD!)

Americans are consuming far more sugar each year compared to previous years.  A higher consumption of empty calories (meaning no nutritional value), makes their diets depleted of other essential nutrients found in more nutrient-dense foods.

2. Nutrient depletions from taking Rx or OTC medications

Over-the-counter and Rx medications can cause nutrient depletions.  For example, statin drugs can deplete CoQ10; synthetic thyroid medication can deplete calcium; and NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can deplete folic acid, iron and vitamin C.

3. Depleted nutrient content in foods

Over the years, much of the soil from farmlands have been severely depleted of mineral content.  This creates a lower than usual mineral content of the foods grown.

4. Genetic mutations

You may have a genetic reason why you cannot utilize enough of the nutrients you consume from foods and so supplements are needed.

5. You may have digestive and/or absorption problems

You may have problems properly digesting and/or absorbing the nutrients from the foods you consume and so supplemental support is needed to help you with digesting and absorbing nutrients properly.

6. Excessive stress

Excessive stress, either physical or psychological, increases the body's need for certain nutrients.  It's common to consume less nutrient-dense foods during stressful times.  This causes a gap in meeting one's nutritional needs.

7. Increased nutrient needs due to disease

Your body may require a higher need of a specific nutrient/s than usual for clinical reasons such as healing from an injury or from a current disease state.

8. Required volume of food is too much

Sometimes, you just cannot get enough of the nutrients you need from food sources because the volume of food would be too much to meet the body's elevated requirements.  In this case, food simply cannot provide enough and supplements are needed.

What Everyone Needs to Know About Supplements

  • Download

If you take any vitamin, mineral or herbal supplements, here is some important information that you need to know.
Supplements are not usually necessary to take for the rest of your life.  It really depends on your clinical needs, your genetic make-up and if these genetic defects are expressing or not, as well as your current health status - meaning does your bloodwork indicate a need to continue with supplemental support or not?  This is why it's critical to always re-assess your supplement needs periodically so that adjustments can be made to dosage, frequency, and changing or deleting a supplement.  The goal is always nutrients through food first!  Supplemental support is meant to be a bridge to get you back in a state of nutritional balance.

A Word About Quality...

According to the FDA website, "Federal law does not require dietary supplements to be proven safe to FDA's satisfaction before they are marketed."

Therefore, not all supplements are made with the same level of quality.  This is why I only use and recommend products from professional brands only.  These professional products can be purchased from a trusted healthcare provider or sometimes directly from the manufacturer.  The professional brands are produced with a much higher level of quality with third-party verification for potency and absorbability, thus ensuring the highest integrity in manufacturing practices.

Since supplements are not well regulated, I do not recommend buying them from a grocery or drug store or other general online shops because the retail brands at these stores are not help to the same standard of manufacturing assurance.

As a convenience to my patients, I offer a variety of professional-grade brands of supplements which are available through my online dispensary.  All orders are delivered directly to your home.

If we meet for a consult and in my assessment I recommend supplements, I will provide you with specific brands, names of products, and product dosage instructions.  This includes screening for any nutrient-drug interactions since many supplements can interact with other Rx or over-the-counter medications.  This is why it is always recommended that you consult with your primary care physician or other healthcare provider before beginning any new supplement routine.

Supplement intake should also be monitored to ensure that dosage is correct and to determine if it is still needed over time.  Unless you have a genetic reason that is supported by clinical findings that indicates otherwise, most supplements are not intended to be taken for very long periods of time.

"EZKits" Also Available in the Dispensary

"EZKits" are lists of supplements and/or bundles of supplements to support various ailments.  Based on common products and protocols that I have used throughout the years, I have bundled together some suggestions that you can easily search for.

To access these bundles, log into your account and click on the "EZKits" tab.
**Please note that you can also search by brand, classification and health topic under the "Categories" tab, making it very easy to find just what you are looking for.

Would you like some assistance with supplements?

When considering taking supplements, it's very important to consider not only quality of the product, but also the dosage and if there is potential for any drug-nutrient interactions from over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription (Rx) medications.  You may want to consider a Nutrition Health Screening to review your supplement choices.
